The Poweful                             The Powerful                                              By Ed Gallagher   1926-He looked down at her; he just looked down at her with his pale blue eyes. He looked at her beautiful young still body lying on the soft bed. His body was still, his heart beating steady, not too slow not too fast. He just stared there with the cigarette dangling out of his mouth.   He merely looked down at her, and not one nerve was jarred. Not by the smell of smoke and blood at least. The Eagle and the SnakeThe black snake lay bloody in fertile sands,  That it used to claim was its land.  Now it is dead by the golden eagle’s righteous hand.  
This land is free from the snake’s tyranny.  
Because now the eagle owns this land.  And as it digs its claws into the sand,  It spreads its wings, and we see its true feathers.  And they are not brown, nor gold, nor white.  But they are ebony, black as the night.  Black as a lie.   The Eagle and the Snake
